Just 12 nautical miles out from the northern part of Gargano, out in the waves of the sea that laps the coast of Puglia, are the islands that make up the archipelago of the Isole Tremiti: San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia and Pianosa. Part of the Parco Nazionale del Gargano, the Isole Tremiti reward visitors come from the coast by ferryboat with the sight of forts, cliffs, rock arches, caves, small coves, reefs and stacks forming a truly breathtaking seascape. These islands were once the favourite haunt of Saracen and Dalmatian pirates, but under Borbon rule they became the setting for a penal colony. Near the end of the twentieth century, they were then declared a “Protected Marine Reserve”.
